All Good things

The Village Olympics athletics competition takes place on 10th september 2011…http://www.saddleworthvillageolympics.co.uk/home.php

As we hit september the nights are starting to draw in. We are going to suspend the Thursday night training for this year. The last session will be on Thursday September 8th. The good news is that we will be running one off training activities every month to help keep you fit over the Autumn and winter. During the down time we are going to work hard to make the Academy even better next year. Keep an eye on this site and your email box for more details of up and coming events.

Andi Jones visit

Last week we were lucky enough to have a visit from the potential 2012 olympic marathon runner Andi Jones.

Andi accompanied a group of runners who ran over wharmton from the farrars arms. He gave a Q and A session at the summit about what it is like to be an athlete and how he got to run for Great Britain. He told us about his experiences at the recent mountain running championships in Turkey and his plans to run the Olympic qualifying time at the Berlin Marathon in september.

The group wish him all the best in his future events.

Thanks Andi.

The only way is up!

Members of the Thursday running group got to grips with the crags above Dovestones Reservoir on saturday. Most of the group tackled two climbs and abseiled down. Although there were some nerves at the start, pretty soon the whole group were climbing like veteran crag rats. The weather was kind to us which was a bonus on what has been a washed out summer so far. Remember to get your name down for a mountain biking session coming soon.

What’s New

To the summit

This week the whole group headed out for the summit of Pots and Pans. Everyone made it up and down in around 1 hour. I was amazed to see even some of the younger runners speeding up the steepest parts of the hill. The training is obviously working. It was a glorious summer evening.

Well done everybody!

Kerrching bid from Academy boys

Last night three of our group presented a bid at Oldham council offices. They aim to take part in outdoor go-karting and a high-wire walk.
We will know by thursday evening wether the bid has been successful and up to twelve kids could go on these activities. Sam, Ollie and Jonathan impresssed the panel by presenting the bid on their own. They just walked right in full of confidence.

Update!

We won the Bid!

Thanks to Ollie, Sam and Jon up to twelve kids will be in for some great experiences. Make sure you keep your stamp books up to date for the chance to go wire walking  and Go-karting! Unfortuately this is only for over 11′s but check out the rock climbing on our activities page!
